Plumber’s Check List

Sewer Requirements

The following is the standard specifications to be followed by individual drain layers in the matter of reconstruction of individually owned private house service laterals.

Types of Pipe Materials to be used:
Pipe Bedding Materials to be used:

Clay Water Stop Dams-(if deemed necessary) At intervals of 50 feet along the length of the reconstructed house service lateral, there shall be installed a compacted clay dam under, alongside, and over the top of the pipe. This dam shall be 2 feet wide and be in place of the rock or stone bedding material. The purpose of this dam is to prevent ground water from following the outside of the pipe to a point of weakness in the pipe where that ground water could enter the pipe.

Property shall be cleared of hazards and unsafe conditions.

Drawings must include:
Inspection and Testing

Prior to the completion of the installation of the reconstructed house service lateral, the drain layer shall insert a test plug in the service line in the home at the start of his project. The sewer service line shall then be pressured tested to 5 pounds per square inch for a period of 20 minutes. Once this test has been successfully completed, the drain layer shall then complete his pipe connection on the existing house service lateral at the public right of way. The drain layer will be expected to keep the sewer service trench open until the full length of the reconstruction has been inspected for general conformance with these requirements. Once the service line has been inspected and found acceptable, the contractor shall then backfill the trench and complete his project. Any reconstructed pipe that has not been covered prior to such inspection will be considered as work that has not been correctly performed and the drain layer will be required to uncover the buried pipe and then retest the reconstructed service lateral.

An inspection permit will be required from the South Palos Township Sanitary District as well as from the Cook County Department prior to the start of reconstruction work.

Note that any damage done to the public right of way must be repaired to the satisfaction of Palos Township Highway Commissioner before the reconstruction work on the service lateral will be considered complete.
